Ogden community shocked, devastated by deadly shooting – fox13now.com

An Ogden police officer was killed Thursday afternoon during a shootout in the 300 block of Jackson Ave with a suspect, police said. Officers were responding to a domestic violence call, when the suspect began shooting, Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt said.

At first, Uriel Salgado said he thought the noise was from construction, but quickly realized the noise was gunshots.

“When I saw that first police officer, I knew, just the way he was driving down the street, I knew there was something serious going on,” he said.

Dozen more police cars followed, Salgado said.

“I’ve seen police officers out kind of taking shelter behind their trucks, I saw a tank, I’ve seen police officers everywhere with shields and rifles,” he said.

The sight of this had Maria Lechuga in tears. She has lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years and said she has never seen anything like this in her life.

“Then I just wanted to cry because what is going on around here,” she said.

Lechuga said she couldn’t believe the news when she found out an officer had been killed.

“I feel so bad for him and for the man who died too,” she said.

The officer was just trying to do his job, Lechuga said.

“I feel sad for the family. It is very sad. They are just trying to do their best,” she said.

One woman stopped to drop off food, and another neighbor handed out waters to officers.

Many departments across the state have changed their photos to reflect their condolences to the Ogden Police Department.
